MC33982 : Intelligent High Current Self-Protected Hi-Side Switch

The MC33982 device is a mixed-signal, multi-chip integrated circuit (IC) designed to replace electromechanical relays, fuses and discrete devices in a variety of embedded systems. The 33982 is designed for harsh environments, and it includes self-recovery features. Programming, control, and diagnostics are implemented via the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). A dedicated parallel input is available for alternate and Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control of the output. SPI programmable fault trip thresholds allow the device to be adjusted for optimal performance in the application.

Housed in a 12x12mm power quad flat pack no-lead package, the IC uses a minimum amount of board space while providing superior thermal characteristics through an exposed heat-sink, and solder rather than epoxy for die attachment.

MC33982 Features

The device can be used as a simple, logic level input controlled, high side FET with the following protection features:

Over-temperature protection

Real-time fault status indication

Ground disconnect protection

Load dump transient protection

Open load detection

Negative battery protection

Over- and under-voltage protection

For more demanding applications, the MC33982 offers several additional unique and enabling features that allow designers to optimize system cost and performance. Each of the following features is accessible via the built-in serial peripheral interface:

Output on/off control

Configurable over-current detection levels and blanking times for fuse emulation

Selectable output slew rate control

Selectable and configurable watchdog with failsafe operation

Selectable and configurable current sensing for real-time monitoring

Device input status feedback

Specific fault information and device status reporting

Daisy chain capable for I/O optimization
